Hi Greg, It depends on what you mean by "monitor". If you just want to know if the device is alive the a simple ping will do the job.  If it's on the WAN then you will need to open up your router(s) to allow external pings as the default is usually off.  You will also have to port forward...

Hi NEMS is not the tool for what you want to do unless you use something like SNMP to interrogate the devices in question in my opinion.  Again this would seem above your level of knowledge as you stated. Testing today 
I set up a Downtime for a printer and got the email notifications for start and end to downtime.
I also am getting Flapping email notifications.

I am just not getting any notifications for hosts
