API to Add New Host or Service

I've gone through all the documentation and I can only identify how to draw data from NEMS.
What I was hopeful of doing, was being able to submit new hosts and services for monitoring from the API.
I've looked at doing this a different way through manually updating config files but from reading various posts, I'm certain this would break NEMS due to the integrated way it works.
The end goal is to be able to add a new device at a site, and automatically start monitoring it with NEMS.
Any ideas?
