Plexpi not buffering

Used the 1.3 immage on a pi with a high end NAS drive connected. Works great other than when I stream on my Roku or Chromecast etc, buffers all the time and sometimes gives me an error that says the server can't transcode fast enough. I have a pi 3 b +. Everything is hardwirwd, even the Roku. Think it's because my files are MKV and not mp4? Don't really want to convert all 600 of them. Any advice?
