Advice for logical configuration

It may be all logical to most, but I'm struggling a bit configure NEMS in a methodical and logical way.
Here's what I want to monitor:
I've got one Linux machine running several websites, and few Linux machines running their own website. For each website I want to check the certificate (implicitly check the update status).
At the moment I'm creating one host for each website and add the appropriate service, which works but is time consuming.
I'm confused how the host preset, host template, and service template are used in collaboration with the add host command.
Any tips?
